What is Panchakarma?
Unhealthy lifestyle, poor food habits and disease lead to the accumulation of toxins in the body. Panchakarma is a five-fold procedure to flush out these toxins from the body. Panchakarma treatment involves the use of various medicines depending upon the constitution of the patient. After examining the disease and the patient, the physician determines the type of procedure and medicine to be used. Ayurveda also recommends Panchakarma as a seasonal treatment for toning your mind-body system. (This is like a routine tune up for a car.)
Panchakarma includes,
1. Therapeutic Emesis (Vamana)
2. Purgation Therapy (Virechana)
3. Medicated Enema (Basti)
4. Errihna therapy (Nasya)
5. Blood Letting (Rakta Mokshana)
These purification methods are essential components in the curative management of those diseases, which are not cured by palliative management. Various massage treatments using different techniques of oil application (both internally and externally) and the use of fomentation methods are pre-requisites for these Panchakarma treatments.
